🌿 Mid-May (after Golden Week)
May 7–31 is one of Japan's best-kept travel secrets. The Golden Week rush ends, prices drop sharply, weather is warm but not hot, and USJ lines are the shortest of the entire year. Lush green parks and gardens everywhere.

🌸 April 8–17 (Cherry Blossoms)
Cherry blossoms are unforgettable — pink trees everywhere, parks full of picnics, Japan at its most photogenic. Apr 8–17 is the sweet spot after peak sakura and before Golden Week (Apr 27–May 6). Worth it if you book 6+ months ahead.

Minion-themed lobby, rooms, and hallways — kids absolutely love it. Superior rooms have 3 separate beds. Connecting rooms sleep up to 7. In-hotel aquarium.
Hotel Keihan Universal Tower — Best for Large Rooms
Rooms that sleep 5 with separate beds. Spa on 31st floor. Great city views. Most budget-friendly official USJ hotel.

Best location in Tokyo for a family. 5 min to Harajuku (Zoe), 20 min to Akihabara (Zander & Ricardo), direct train to HND airport on checkout day. Oct/Nov: amazing fall foliage views from upper floors.
Hyatt Regency Tokyo
Large family rooms, pool, great breakfast buffet. More affordable than typical Hyatt. Same neighborhood access as Keio Plaza.

AUS → SFO (~3h layover) → KIX Osaka (~11h). Fly United via San Francisco — fastest route from Austin. Lands morning of Oct 23. Pack cooling towels, neck pillows, download shows for the kids offline.
Oct 23 — Arrive Osaka 🇯🇵 · Recovery Day
KIX → Haruka Express → Universal City hotel. Check in, walk Universal CityWalk, grab takoyaki (octopus balls), konbini dinner from Lawson or 7-Eleven. Early bedtime — 14-hour time zone difference hits hard on Day 1.
Oct 24 — USJ Day 1 🎮 · Nintendo World + Harry Potter
Be at gates 30 min before open (early entry for hotel guests!). Hit Super Nintendo World + Mario Kart first — it fills up fast. Wizarding World of Harry Potter: Butterbeer is a must. Express Pass covers both. Tell Guest Services it's a birthday celebration — they give out birthday buttons and everyone greets you all day!

Donkey Kong Country (brand new Dec 2025!), Flying Dinosaur coaster, Jurassic World ride. October = Halloween Horror Nights after dark at USJ — themed zones, actors in costume, special shows. Family-friendly intensity. Evening: Dotonbori neon district for dinner — the giant mechanical crab sign, ramen, wagyu skewers.
Oct 26 — Osaka City Day 🏯
Morning: Osaka Castle + castle park (autumn leaves beginning!). Afternoon: Shinsaibashi shopping arcade for Zoe's fashion haul and Mary Rose's thrift hunting. Den Den Town (Osaka's anime district) — Zander and Ricardo hit the figure shops. Evening: Namba dining — Ichiran solo-booth ramen or Kani Doraku.
Oct 27 — Shinkansen to Tokyo 🚄 (2h45m!)
Hikari bullet train Osaka → Tokyo — covered by JR Pass. Kids will love the speed (186 mph) and Mount Fuji views if weather is clear! Check into Shinjuku hotel. Afternoon: Shibuya Crossing (most famous intersection in the world), PARCO 6th floor: Nintendo Tokyo + Pokémon Center Shibuya.
Oct 28 — Akihabara ⚔️ + Harajuku 🛍️
Morning: Akihabara — Animate (Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man), Mandarake (rare figures), Jump Shop, Tamashii Nations, gachapon machines (budget ¥5,000 for capsule toys!). Afternoon: Harajuku Takeshita Street — Zoe's fashion paradise + rainbow crepes. Omotesando for Mary Rose's upscale thrift browsing.

Tokyo HND → SFO → AUS. Haneda has excellent airport shopping — last chance for matcha Kit-Kats (wasabi, sakura, strawberry), anime goods, Japanese candy. United/ANA. Arrive Austin same evening. You'll all be changed people.
